AFC Fylde remain top of the Conference North thanks to Danny Rowe’s solitary goal against a physical North Ferriby side that just could not find the back of the net.

Rowe scored the only goal on 36 minutes when Adam Nicklin let Richie Allen’s square ball slip under his glove which allowed the striker to tap in from close range in acres of space.

The visitors created countless chances through Tom Denton, Adam Bolder and Nathan Jarman but couldn’t get through a solid Fylde defence.

Ferriby began strong and Nathan Jarman and Tom Denton caused the Fylde defence a number of problems but Jarman headed an early corner over the bar minutes before Ben Hichliffe almost spilled the ball to Jason St Juste’s feet but Fylde broke for Michael Barnes to shoot straight at Nicklin from Allen’s pass.

St Juste then beat his marker on the edge of the box but couldn’t get enough on the long goal kick from Nicklin to send it past Hinchliffe.

And Bolder missed a couple of chances before Denton fired a great chance over the bar from close range just before the half hour mark for the visitors.

Fylde are not the top goal scorers in the league for no reason and another break by Allen from half way, raced past his marker and squared to Rowe at the far post to tap in from close range.

But five minutes before the break Ferriby were unlucky not to equalise when Liam King headed a deep cross against the outside of Hinchliffe’s post and wide.

The second period was just as even with both sides trading possession and shots at goal. Denton saw one point-blank header saved before firing inches over the bar after a goal-mouth scramble all within a minute of the restart.

Bolder forced a decent save from Hinchliffe four minutes later and Nicklin was made to work hard to keep out Allen’s low stike.

Gregg Anderson fired a wayward shot high over the bar for Ferriby just after the hour mark and Potts sent a free kick in the same direction five minutes later for Fylde.

Barnes and Allen continued to surge forward as Fylde were enjoying more freedom for periods of the second half and Allen was unlucky to find Nicklin’s grateful arms with a chipped effort from the edge of the box on 71 minutes.

Then it was the turn of Ferriby to attack and they came very close to an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining but Tom Hannigan managed to race back and get in the way of Jarman’s strike and send it wide.

Minutes later Denton missed the chance of the match for his side when he headed Dan Clayton’s pin-point cross inches wide of the back post and then, with a minute left on the clock, he hit the same post with another header which Hinchliffe had to stop on the line.

Allen had a couple of half chances to make sure of the win in stoppage time but there were to be no more goals in this match and The Coasters held out for a fantastic win.

Fylde boss Dave Challinor was delighted his side continued their impressive run: “It was a tough, tough game today, especially after the 120 minutes we played on Tuesday night.

“North Ferriby are a strong side but we scored the goal at a good time and for 20 minutes of the second half I thought we were excellent and we should really have got the second goal.

“On another day we’d have got that second goal but we didn’t and the last 20 minutes was bit of a hang on as the lads were really tired.”

The Coasters face a mid-week trip to 20th placed Tamworth on Tuesday. A side who have struggled this season with just one win from their 11 matches so far – Kick off 7:45pm.
