AFC Fylde youngster Josh Kay has signed professional terms with League One side Barnsley.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been involved in the Coasters’ first team set-up this season and made his debut in the 2-0 FA Trophy victory over Warrington Town in November.

Kay spent the last two seasons playing at Squires Gate before stepping up to AFC Fylde in the summer.

Coasters boss Dave Challinor said: “We are delighted that Josh has been offered a pro deal with Barnsley. He came in six months ago and has really kicked on in that time. Hopefully he will be the first in a long line to come through our Academy programme.”

Bobby Hassell, Barnsley’s Head of Academy Recruitment, said: “Josh came to the club’s attention a while ago. We’ve monitored his progress and liked what we saw.

“We invited him for a trial where he impressed to the point of us wanting to sign him. He’ll be a useful member of our development squad and we’re looking for him to push on.”

Kay said: “I’m delighted to join such a big club like Barnsley and can’t wait to get going. I know Barnsley give opportunities to younger players and I’ll aim to grab my chance when it comes along.

“I’d like to thank everyone connected with AFC Fylde for helping me to where I am today. This is a very exciting new chapter in my career and I’m determined to work really hard to make it a success.”

The club would like to wish Josh all the best for the future.
