Match Report

AFC Fylde were dumped out of the Lancashire FA Trophy thanks to a penalty shoot-out defeat to North West Counties Division Two side Holker Old Boys.

Holker matched The Coasters all the way and after Danny Lloyd gave Fylde the lead, Wayne Curtis levelled the tie soon after.

Danny Rowe restored Fylde’s lead five minutes before the break but Curtis equalised again with his second just eight minutes into the second half.

And when Llloyd added a second of his own it looked like Fylde might pull away and get the result that was expected of them but Holker struck back again through Jordan Brough’s strike.

And after the result stayed that way it was The Stags who prevailed over their Conference North opponents winning 4-3 in the shootout after six penalties each.

For what was a much changed side from Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Plymouth Albion Fylde started bright but couldn’t quite get the killer touch to score an early goal.

Dion Charles made a jinking run from half way to surge into the box but was met by a decent save by Holker keeper Ollie Bell from his low strike.

Then, after Curtis fired wide after a good move for the visitors, Rowe and Michael Potts both came within a whisker of opening the scoring but sent their shots the wrong side of the woodwork.

The Stags looked dangerous each time they broke and Jordan Brough was unlucky not to hit the target with a decent shot from distance before Potts sent another effort inches over the bar.

But the deadlock was finally broken with half an hour on the clock when Lloyd curled an expertly taken free kick onto the underside of the crossbar and in.

However, the lead didn’t last long as within three minutes Holker levelled the tie through a goal from former Morecambe man Curtis.

And Holker almost took the lead on 39 minutes when Jamie Pattinson hit an effort narrowly over from outside the box.

But a minute later Rowe was on hand to restore Fylde’s lead with a fierce low strike that Bell had no chance of keeping out and the score remained that way until half time.

It didn’t take long for the visitors to strike back after the break with another fine take from Curtis who rounded Hinchliffe with ease to bury his second of the night and bring the scores level.

Striker Dave Swarbrick, who enjoyed a brief spell with The Coasters in 2011, almost caught out Hinchliffe with a 40 yard free kick which was whipped in towards the back post and met by no one and the Fylde keeper had to tip it around his post for a corner.

Further chances were exchanged before Fylde briefly got on the front foot again on 71 minutes through Lloyd’s second – a fierce strike that Bell had no chance of keeping out.

But that lead lasted all of two minutes as Brough levelled the match for a third time after a decent move from Holker allowed him time to poke a shot past Hinchliffe and into the net.

Jamie Allen and Potts had late strikes to win the game as did Curtis for his side but no winner could be found in normal time which meant it was penalties that would decide it.

Adam Sumner couldn’t put the demon of the Play-off Final behind him as he missed Fylde’s first but Richie Allen, Booth and Hinchliffe made sure the score was 3-3 all and into sudden death where Potts saw his saved before Brad Hubbold won the match with his successful spot-kick.
