We are delighted to announce that Max Johnstone has joined AFC Fylde, on a one-year contract with a further year option in the club’s favour.

The towering goalkeeper arrives at Mill Farm following a successful trial period. He not only impressed during training, but also during his 30 minute spell between the sticks in the recent pre-season friendly with Wigan Athletic.

The now 22-year-old was most recently in the SPL with St Johnstone, before leaving during the summer. Max began his career with local side, Fleetwood Town before the talented youngster was snapped up by Premier League giants, Manchester United, joining elder brother Sam on the books with the Red Devils.

Being schooled at Old Trafford and developing his game, Johnstone’s next move was with another footballing powerhouse, Sunderland AFC. The ‘keeper trained alongside the first team throughout his time with the club, with his game time coming at U23s level. The next move was top flight football in Scotland, a spell that was cut short due to the season being ended early.

Having grown up in Preston, Max is now looking forward to returning to local surroundings and furthering his career with the Coasters.

Speaking to afcfylde.co.uk after signing his contract, he told us: “It’s a great opportunity to come in and play some games. Nealo [Chris Neal] is an experienced ‘keeper and a great lad, so it will be great to learn from him but I want to be pushing him as well, whilst picking his brains to improve myself.

“I’m buzzing to be here. I started keeping a closer eye on the club a couple of years ago, being a local lad I always look how teams around me are getting on. I remember watching the FA Trophy final on television, so I tried to find out more about the club. The set-up is great and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

The Gaffer, Jim Bentley gave his thoughts to afcfylde.co.uk after finalising the ‘keeper spots at Mill Farm. He said: “Max has trained with us for a couple of weeks now after his release from St Johnstone and has done well.

“He has football in his family, he’s a very determined character and is a local lad. He has a good background in the professional game and comes highly recommended, so we look forward to working with him further and helping him to developing his potential.”
