AFC Fylde’s youth squad started their defence of the Lancashire U18’s Cup with a 2-0 win at Leyland Albion. Leyland’s team had won the trophy at U16 level and Fylde knew they were in for a tough match.

Only 3 players survived from the team that won the trophy last year but that didn’t seem to affect the team as Rob Hanslip opened the scoring after 13 minutes. Hanslip cut in from the right wing and unleashed an unstoppable shot with his left foot, which curled into the far corner.

Fylde continued to apply the pressure but found the Leyland keeper in inspired form whilst good work at the back from Lee Squires, Jacob Anderson, James Corbett and Russ Townsend prevented any serious chances for the home side.

With just two minutes to go Jack Williams scored to confirm the win for Fylde and send them through to the next round. Sweeper Jacob Anderson was awarded Man of the Match for his fantastic individual performance.

The Coasters youngsters will be looking to build on this result when they play host to Altrincham on Sunday.

Coasters Team: Squires, Townsend, Anderson, Corbett, Hanslip, Carpenter, Futter (c), Ing, Hothersall, Williams, Fox; Subs (all used in rotation): Heyes, Graham, Catterson, Mullarkey, Willder.

AFC Fylde’s academy squad also won on Sunday, this time a thrilling 6-4 away win at Bolton Wyresdale in the Lancashire Cup.

Fylde completely dominated the game and the scoreline was kind to the hosts. Goals from Lewis Rowe, Ben Anderson, Connor Robinson, Regan Linney, Mark Forshaw and James Crook saw Fylde complete a very impressive attacking display against a side in a higher division than themselves.

The lads seemed to lose concentration towards the end of the game and conceded 2 consolation goals, however the team will be delighted with their performance and they Padiham at home in the next round on 28th September.
