Here we will explore past AFC Fylde results week by week. This time, we look back on an away victory at Whitby Town…

Whitby Town 1-2 AFC Fylde (21/09/13)

AFC Fylde battled their way back to the top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division thanks to a deserved 2-1 victory over Whitby Town. Early goals from the two Matt’s, Hughes and Blinkhorn, inside the first ten minutes put The Coasters in a commanding position. The home side pulled a goal back mid-way through the second half through Adam Rundle, but his side couldn’t find an equaliser as The Coasters secured yet another win.

It was a great start made by The Coasters, with the first real effort of the game, a corner was swung in from the left which Blinkhorn shot at goal, but Whitby keeper Shane Bland could only parry the ball back into the middle of his area where Hughes was waiting to smash home for a fifth minute lead.

Fylde doubled their lead on ten minutes when Danny Lloyd broke on half way, played in Michael Barnes on the right, who sent a pin-point cross towards the diving Blinkhorn who headed in from six yards.

Winger Rundle was the dangerman for but he sent his first effort wide on 18 minutes after Whitby had worked their way to the edge of Fylde’s box. The home side had two great chances within a minute soon after. Whitby soon had another couple of chances but Craig Farrell curled his shot over the bar before Richard Pell headed narrowly over. After numerous chances for the home side went begging with Shane Henry, Graeme Armstrong and Kevin Burgess all failing to beat Hinchliffe, and Dorney and Lloyd missing good chances for Fylde, it was Whitby who scored next through Rundle.

The home side won a corner which eventually found its way to Armstrong who was denied on the line by Andy Russell, but Lee Mason lofted the ball back into the area and Rundle was on hand to volley home from eight yards with 25 minutes to go. Thankfully though, The Coasters hung on to record a victory which saw them return to the top of the table.
