Saturday can’t come around quick enough for everyone at AFC Fylde after defeat to Barnet in midweek.

Tuesday was a night to forget for everyone, but a tough trip down to Torquay, who have started the season well after promotion to the MANarama National League, awaits Dave Challinor’s men

There are a few absentees for The Coasters this weekend. Kurt Willoughby is out with a hernia, whilst Lewis Montrose is close to a return, along with Luke Burke.

The Opposition

Name: Torquay United

Nickname: The Gulls

Ground: Plainmoor

League Position: 11th

Torquay United are one of the new sides in the National League this season. After being relegated in 2017/18 to the National League South, they bounced back at the first time of asking, winning the title by 10 points.

That momentum has carried on into this season, with The Gulls sitting mid-table, just four points off of the playoffs.

Gary Johnson is the man in charge at Plainmoor. He took over in the September 2018 following the club’s poor start in the National League South and guided them to the title with three games to spare.

During his time as manager at The Gulls, he has the highest win percentage he has ever had in his managerial career, with 60.4%.

Fact Pack

  1. The Gulls were promoted as champions of the National League South last year.

  2. Torquay have won five, lost five and drawn four so far this campaign – with three of these defeats coming at home.

  3. After firing 32 goals last campaign, Jamie Reid is already up and firing – leading the way in the league with 9 goals already.

  4. Alongside Jamie Reid, Kyle Cameron and Ben Wynter are the only two players to have started all 14 games this season.

  5. With 21 goals against, Torquay have conceded the most goals in the top half – but with 23 scored (as many as league leaders Bromley) things have balanced out favourably.

  6. The two sides have met twice, with Fylde winning on both occasions in the 2017/18 National League season.
