Match Report

The Coasters had to fight for the point against bottom of the league Hyde in an entertaining, end-to-end game at Ewen Fields.

Josh Wilson’s superb strike gave Fylde the lead after 58 seconds but after Andy Pearson equalised five minutes before the break captain Bradley Barnes was shown a straight red for a foul on Connor Hughes.

It got even worse for Fylde midway through the second half when Josh Langley picked up his second yellow of the game leaving Fylde playing with nine men.

It took just 58 seconds for Fylde to break the deadlock when Wilson unleashed a 30 yard screamer which keeper Ed Wilczynski had no chance of stopping.

Despite being bottom of the table Hyde looked a well organised side that pushed forward at every opportunity but Fylde had another half chance for Caspar Hughes on 13 minutes before a decent spell of possession saw Hyde almost pull an equaliser back on 22 minutes.

Luke Giverin’s powerful shot hit the top of Langley’s head and looked to be looping over the stranded Ben Hinchliffe but the Fylde keeper managed to dive back to tip the ball over his bar.

Three minutes later the home side shouted for foul on James Burke as he went down under the challenge of Langley on the edge of Fylde’s box but the referee waved away their protests and play continued for Fylde to break but a second long range effort from Wilson smacked against the base of Hyde’s post.

Hyde captain Josh Brizell was unlucky not to trouble Hinchliffe with a free kick that was punched away before Ben Holmes’ long distance strike was parried by his namesake before collecting.

And Hinchliffe was on hand to save his side again on 39 minutes as he almost spilled Hughes’ low strike into the path of Giverin but was able to recover and punch the loose ball away.

But a minute later, Hyde equalised when Pearson got the final touch onto Giverin’s corner and soon after Bradley Barnes saw red for lunging in on Hughes in what was possibly an unfortunate call for the Fylde captain.

However, the sending off seemed to kick some life into Fylde and for the final few minutes they created a number of chances to try and sneak a lead at half time – Danny Rowe, Danny Lloyd, Langley and Wilson all came close.

It was the home side who started the second half well as Hughes shot narrowly wide before another long distance strike from Holmes almost caught Hinchliffe off guard but luckily the ball bounced wide off the Fylde keepers arm.

Wilson should have done better when he headed a corner straight at Wilczynski just seconds before he fired another shot over the bar for Fylde.

And with an hour on the clock Perry Ng raced up the field to unleash a low shot on Fylde’s goal which Hinchliffe had to be on guard to save.

Minutes later Wilson again missed the target with another header which sailed inches wide of Hyde’s post but disaster struck again with 20 minutes to go as Langley slid in hard on Hughes and received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Now down to nine men The Coasters had to hold on for their point as Hyde pressed forward in search of their first league win since December 6th.

An ambitious 35 yard strike from Brizell smacked the left post, bounced back into play and the next chance was squandered by Ryan Masterson as he headed wide on 75 minutes.  Soon after Masterson cut back for Giverin to shoot but Hinchliffe saved well again.

As the game entered the final minutes another Giverin strike was expertly tipped over by Hinchliffe before Masterson saw another effort smothered by Fylde’s man-of-the-match.

Then, deep into stoppage time Adam Sumner sent a searching free kick into Hyde’s area for Wilson to half-volley towards goal only for Wilczynski to deny him a winner.

This result takes Fylde back down to second in the Vanarama Conference North a point behind Barrow who won at Leamington but still have a game in hand over their Cumbrian rivals.
