AFC Fylde Academy progressed into the FA Cup Second Round proper after a late Danny Ormerod goal sealed a 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers Academy at the Eco-Power Stadium.

The Young Coasters started on the front foot and almost took the lead when first, Seb Bailey tested Jake Oram in the Doncaster goal – before Jack Morris forced Oram into a smart save down low.

A good spell from Fylde spurred Rovers on, leading to what would have been the game’s opener after Freddie Allen latched onto Justin Bennett’s cross to convert from close range, only to turn to the lineman and see the flag up for offside before Will Green sent a fierce drive just over the bar.

Coasters Chances came and went towards the end of the first 45 for striker Ormerod, who sent an acrobatic shot inches wide, and Charlie Markland, who rolled wide with only Oram to beat from the edge of the box.

The second half didn’t seem to have the same bite that the first 45 did, but there were early half chances for Josh Mulligan-Green in the opening stages, none of which had a product.

Markland then had a golden opportunity to put the Coasters ahead with 10 minutes to go, but after a free run through Rovers’ defence, he blazed over from the edge of the area.

However, there was still time for late drama in eight minutes of added time when the Coasters sealed their progression into the Second Round of the competition thanks to Ormerod.

The young striker managed to turn his man after letting a bouncing ball played into him roll across his body to eventually take one touch and and dispatch low into the bottom corner, beyond the on-rushing Oram.
