The Club is delighted to announce that Emeka Obi has committed his future to AFC Fylde by signing a two-year contract extension.

Obi, who arrived at Mill Farm Stadium from Wigan Athletic in February 2020, is yet to make an appearance for the Coasters due to the curtailment of the 2020/21 season, but the management staff have made a move to ensure the 19-year-old is tied down for another two seasons.

The towering defender shot onto the footballing scene at the age of 15, when he made his first-team debut in the Checkatrade Trophy for Bury FC, before making the move to Premier League outfit, Liverpool, for a six-figure fee.

In November 2018, he made the switch to Wigan Athletic, where he put pen to paper on his first professional contract and linked up with current AFC Fylde staff, Nick Chadwick and Jonty Castle.

At the DW Stadium, Obi played a key role in helping Wigan’s Under-18’s lift the EFL Youth Alliance title, EFL Youth Alliance Cup, the Central League title, and the Lancashire FA Youth Cup. After impressing the Latics coaching staff, the 19-year-old went on to make 9 first-team appearances.

Speaking to afcfylde.co.uk, Manager Jim Bentley said: “Emeka is a good, hungry young player who has great potential. Nick Chadwick has worked closely with him over the past couple of seasons and rates him very highly.

“With him being with us over the past few months it is evident Emeka has a lot of qualities we are looking for and given time, a bit of confidence and lots of hard work from us and more so him, he could become a top player. We are very pleased and excited he’s signed for us, he ticks a lot of boxes, and hopefully, he fulfills that undoubted potential here at AFC Fylde.”
