The Coasters have completed the sign of central defender Alex Whitmore today, following his departure from Grimsby Town.

Whitmore, 23, was a product of Burnley’s youth system, where he gained first-team experience out on loan at Chester and Gateshead.

Following the experience in the National League, Whitmore made the step up to the Football League with Morecambe on-loan, where he made 43 appearances for The Shrimps.

After a brief spell in League One with Bury, a permanent switch to then League 2 side Chesterfield was the next move for Whitmore, who made 15 appearances, before making a move to Grimsby Town.

Whitmore made 35 appearances in all competitions last season for Grimsby, adding further experience to an already impressive Football League CV for the young defender.

Talking to afcfylde.co.uk, Whitmore was delighted to have put pen to paper, and excited to get the season started with the Coasters.

“Off the back of AFC Fylde’s last season, the intention will be to do one more this season and get promoted,” said Whitmore.

“I’m somebody who tries their best to give everything they’ve got,” Whitmore said. “I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I pride myself on keeping the ball out of the back of the net.”

“Where I take real pride is the clean sheets, and doing the horrible nitty-gritty side of it that sometimes doesn’t get seen.”

With 89 appearances in the Football League already under his belt, the decision to sign Whitmore was a straightforward one for Coasters boss Dave Challinor.

“His experience is a massive plus, having played at our level on loan spells, but for someone of his age to have the experience he does in the Football Lague is brilliant.”

“He fits in perfectly to what we do and how we want to play, and we’ve given ourselves good options by bringing himself and Kyle [Jameson] in,” said Challinor.

“Last year we went to a three at the back, and on occasions, we may do that it next season, and Alex’s arrival gives us great flexibility.”
