AFC Fylde’s next game is a home fixture against Stockport County this Saturday in the F.A. Cup 2nd Qualifying Round (3pm KO).

The Coasters host Stockport County for the second time this season, this time in the most prestigious English cup competition, the F.A. Cup. Last season, Fylde made it all the way to the first round proper but eventually came up short in a 2-0 defeat to League Two Plymouth Argyle. At this stage last season, The Coasters beat Bradford Park Avenue in a replay, before going on to beat Buxton and Kings Lynn.

Stockport on the other hand have played in further rounds of the F.A. Cup in their history, having reached the 5th round in 1935, 1950 and more recently, 2001 where they were defeated 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur. 2011 was the first time in eighty-seven years that Stockport failed to make the first round of the F.A. Cup after they lost 1-0 to Southport.

Fylde have had a great start to the league season and they find themselves in a familiar position of second in the table, having amassed twenty-three points from their opening eleven fixtures. Fylde go into this game on the back of two successive victories over FC United of Manchester at KP (4-0) and Boston United away from home (3-0). The recent addition of Akil Wright on loan from Fleetwood Town bolstered the squad for the Boston United victory, and the added good news about Coasters top scorer Dion Charles’ new contract only helps add to the positively around AFC Fylde at present.

Stockport sit sixth in the league table just four points behind The Coasters on nineteen points having won five of their eleven games so far. However, the have only won one of their four games since defeating The Coasters at the end of August although that was their most recent fixture, a 1-0 victory over Alfreton at home. They brought in manager Neil Young in the summer and have signed several ex league players including fullback Gareth Roberts and striker Kayode Odejayi, who scored the winner against Chelsea in an FA Cup tie for Barnsley back in 2008.

These two sides have only faced each other three times in previous history, with the most recent game ending 3-2 to Stockport at Kellamergh Park on Bank Holiday Monday in August, just under one month ago. Jake Kirby snatched the winning goal for the away side with just a couple of minutes to go in a game full of chances and goals. Stockport took the lead twice through Baggie and Dyson, with Baker and a Rowe thunderbolt levelling up the game for The Coasters on two occasions.

Last season’s games both ended in 0-0 draws in late November and early December. The Coasters have never defeated Stockport, but will be out for revenge on Saturday afternoon.
